CYCLISTS and pedestrians who use the pathway behind Wollongong's North Beach Bathers Pavilion will hit a detour sign today. The ramp to Cliff Rd will also be closed to allow for work to proceed on the $12 million pavilion re-vamp."We encourage pedestrians to detour along the Cliff Rd footpath while the work takes place," Wollongong City Council's Peter Kofod said yesterday. He said temporary steps would be installed south of the pavilion for beach access. Temporary toilets will operate on the north side of the surf club."The refurbishment will give the pavilion a second lease of life and is an important milestone for Wollongong," Mr Kofod said. The work involves extensive repairs to the building and includes replacement of concrete slabs affected by concrete cancer and a new viewing platform. The project also includes new equipment storage facilities for lifeguards and a 3m-wide promenade overlooking the beach. The rear pathway for pedestrians and cyclists will be increased from 2.5m to more than 6m.A later stage includes a cafe at the southern end of the 1938 building.
