Facelift starts for famous pavilion

NORTH Wollongong beachgoers and Blue Mile joggers may notice a few changes as they pass the North Beach Bathers' Pavilion this morning, with work expected to begin on the refurbishment of the building.Safety fencing was the first addition due to be installed today, as the $12 million renovation gest underway.Wollongong City Council's general manager David Farmer said the pathway at the rear of the pavilion would be closed to the public from tomorrow morning."While construction is underway the pathway for pedestrians and cyclists at the rear of the bathers' pavilion will be closed, as will the ramp leading from the pathway up to Cliff Rd," he said."We encourage pedestrians to detour along the Cliff Rd footpath while the works take place."Mr Farmer said temporary steps would be installed south of the pavilion to provide access to the beach and temporary toilets will be located on the north side of the surf club.The refurbishment includes extensive repairs to the building, replacement of concrete slabs affected by "concrete cancer", the construction of a new viewing platform and equipment storage facilities for lifeguards.
