MIREK Szychowski was the structural engineer for Glendale Sports Centre.
His job was to make sure that everything was completed on time and within the budget.
Construction began in February 1998 and lasted 12 months.
There were more than 100 people involved: concreters, carpenters, welders and surveyors.
The project experienced some delays due to weather but otherwise ran to schedule.
`The men worked long hours and under lights,' Mr Szychowski said. `In summer they started work about 6am. In winter they started an hour later and finished around 5pm to 6pm.
`No-one was seriously injured, however, there were a few minor accidents.'
Mr Szychowski said a `grant was given by NSW Government of nearly $3million and the Lake Macquarie City Council donated $6million more for the project'.
Studies were undertaken into the environmental impact of the centre. Trees that were cut down were mulched and used in landscaping. Water run-off was directed to a nearby creek.
